A Floating Division Baffle

The basic goals in designing the bio-separator were to provide an economical and effective method for designing new lagoon systems, and upgrading existing lagoon systems to accept increased flows, as well as increasing the performance to meet treatment limits within the EPA guidelines.

The Bio-Separator is a pre-engineered, custom fabricated, flow diverting baffle which can be manufactured using a variety of fabric reinforced coated materials. The material selection is based on the application and the chemical make-up of the waste to be treated.

The Bio-Separator is fabricated to the specific length, depth, and side slope desired. Windows can be positioned to achieve the desired flow pattern in the lagoon.

EXISTING LAGOONS

The use of the Bio-Separator offers an economical approach for the upgrade of existing lagoon systems to meet the allowable limits for BODs and Total Suspended Solids imposed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The floating baffles allow the system to be upgraded without the expense and difficulty of dewatering the lagoon, which is usually required when earthen dikes or rigid baffle systems are used.

NEW LAGOON SYSTEMS

Lagoon systems using the floating baffles provide a low cost alternative to activated sludge systems. Properly designed, these systems can produce effluents in which the average concentration for BODs and Total Suspended Solids meet the requirement set by the EPA. Other attractive features are that these systems require very little maintenance or operator attention, can be constructed at a cost which is 40 to 50 % less than activated sludge systems, and operate at a power level 50% less than activated sludge plants.

Industrial lagoons: The Bio-Separator can be designed and fabricated to meet the specific needs of an industrial waste treatment process. Based on bench scale treatability studies, a fabric resistant to the waste can be selected. A curtain can be used to create mixing areas, activated sludge basins, clarification areas with positive sludge return, and disinfection areas.

FLOATING COVERS

Trap & Use Methane Gas.

Floating covers can be utilized to help maintain better sanitary conditions for the storage of potable water and stop evaporation loss. They can also be used to capture methane gas from waste lagoons. The geosynthetic membrane traps the gas, which is collected and used as an auxiliary fuel source in a cogeneration power plant.

LAGOON LINERS

Cost-Effective Method For Lining Environmental Control and Water Conservation Facilities.

Geosynthetic Liners offer a cost-effective method for lining environmental control and water conservation facilities. Liners prevent leachate and waste liquid components from leaking from impoundments and subsequently entering and contaminating ground water. Liners can be used to contain water impoundment for safe potable water through the use of NSF 61 approved Geosynthetics.

About GSE HD

GSE HD is a high quality, high density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane produced from specially formulated, virgin polyethylene resin. This polyethylene resin is designed specifically for flexible gemomembrane applications. GSE HD contains approximately 97.5% polyethylene, 2.5% carbon bland and trace amounts of antioxidants and heat stabilizers; no other additives, fillers or extenders are used. GSE HD has outstanding chemical resistance, mechanical properties, environmental stress crack resistance, dimensional stability and thermal aging characteristics. GSE HD has excellent resistance to UV radiation and is suitable for exposed conditions.

BAFFLE CASE STUDY

Rayonier Wastewater Treatment Improvements

Jesup, Georgia, 2000

The existing on-site wastewater treatment plant for this paper mill was overloaded as a result of increased production. The city was receiving odor complaints and the plant operators were not able to stay within discharge limits. The plant has two separate waste streams, one of which was the major contributor to the problems. The plant environmental and engineering people found a solution to the problem.

Their choice was modifying the operation of an existing lagoon. This lagoon would pre-treat the problem waste stream before it was combined with the other wastewater. A portion of these modifications consisted of covering the center section to create an anaerobic treatment cell and using a series of baffles to extend the retention time of the wastewater in the anaerobic zone. This would eliminate odors, and substantially reduce the load on the existing plant.

A 45 mil PPR cover was chosen to seal the anaerobic section to prevent the escape of odors. 30 mil XR-5 was chosen for the floating baffles to extend the retention time of the anaerobic section.

The geomembrane work started late summer and was completed on schedule. The cell was placed in operation and the baffles and cover system have functioned as designed with little required maintenance.

This covered anaerobic section has allowed the wastewater treatment plant to stay within its discharge limits, and ended odor complaints.

LINER CASE STUDY

BilMar Foods, Inc., Wastewater Treatment Improvements

Zeeland, MI 1997

The existing on-site wastewater treatment plant for this turkey processing plant was operating erratically as a result of two separate waste steams with varying flow rates. The plant operators were not able to stay within discharge limits. HDR Engineering was chosen for process design and the civil design.

Their choice was adding two covered equalization cells to the existing treatment plant to store the different wastewater streams. This would allow the wastewater to the treatment plant to be blended so the plant could operated with a steady load. It would also eliminate any odors from the stored wastewater.

The equalization cell specifications required liners of 60 mil HDPE geomembrane to prevent groundwater contamination. 100 mil HDPE was chosen for the covers to seal the cells to prevent the escape of odors. These cover systems had to allow the cells to be filled and emptied repeatedly.

Environmental Fabrics Inc. of Gaston, SC was chosen for the geomembrane work on this project. The geomembrane work started late summer and was completed on schedule. The cells were placed in operation and the liner and cover systems have functioned as designed with little required maintenance.

These covered equalization cells have allowed the wastewater treatment plant to operate within its discharge limits, and eliminate odor complaints to the city.
